Taka Perry: The Producers
Playlist - 43 Songs
Raised in Australia by an American father and a Japanese mother, it’s only natural that Taka Perry is not only bilingual but now resides in multiple countries and works with artists from around the globe. Perry scored an early breakthrough helming Ruel’s soulful 2018 single “Younger,” which achieved double platinum sales in Australia, before folding pleasing elements of American soft rock and Japanese city pop into Sycco’s “Nicotine” in 2020. That same year, the occasional solo artist led an impassioned version of Kanye West’s “Jesus Walks” for triple j’s Like A Version series, recruiting Emalia, Gia Vorne, and A.GIRL on vocals and interpolating part of Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s “All the Stars” along the way. In addition to overseeing the pitched-up vocal intro and snappy rhythmic spine of Thomas Headon’s “2009 TOYOTA” and the breakbeats fluttering beneath “Touch” by Los Angeles girl group KATSEYE, Perry has increasingly worked with more and more Japanese artists. He’s lent his head-nodding finesse to rapper WLYWNKA’s “Excuse Me,” singer-songwriter SIRUP’s bilingual “RENDEZVOUS,” and J-pop boy band MAZZEL’s “J.O.K.E.R.” with the latter shifting seamlessly between rapping and singing.
