Bloody Civilian: Oshe Naija
Playlist - 29 Songs
“Taraba State is unique because it’s so, so beautiful,” singer-songwriter and producer Bloody Civilian tells Apple Music. “It has beautiful wildlife, and luscious lands for farming. I think the bulk of our economic activity is definitely farming and we have a variety of vegetation.”
For Oshe Naija, our celebration of the sounds of Nigeria, we asked the genre-defying star to reflect on how her home city and state helped shape her own music—and the Nigerian soundscape.
“Musically, in Taraba we have a lot of synchronisation in our art, which means that it’s usually [created] as a community,” Bloody Civilian shares. “Music is done as a group; there’s a lot of clapping of hands, beating of chests, stomping of feet; handmade drums and handmade tiny bangle-looking things. We have our own colourful culture, and it’s festive. Although I didn’t grow up in Taraba, being from Taraba and interacting with the Jukun community of Abuja, I definitely got to learn so many things that eventually helped me in my music career. A lot of songs in our culture are actually passed down from parents, so my dad taught us different songs that we would sing as kids.”
That community ethos—and tradition of cultural transmission through art—echoes not only in her own repertoire, but also throughout Nigerias various musical scenes. “Afrobeats is definitely a fairly new genre—[yet] African music is pretty old,” she explains, “so to create this playlist, I wanted to put together a time capsule of the most impactful songs in the history Nigerian music.” Here, she’s spotlighted Threewisemen, Ditweni, footplus, Morell, Sarz, M.I Abaga, Tiwa Savage and more—if you hear something you like, add it to your library.
