There are earworms, and then there are Daft Punk songs. Brain-invading early singles like 1995’s “Da Funk” and 1997’s “Around the World” announced the helmeted Paris duo of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter as playful yet precise masters of retro-modern electronic music. But that was nothing compared to 2000’s inescapable “One More Time,” a global smash that heralded Discovery—which later earned a spot on Apple Music’s 100 Best Albums list. The faux-robotic duo’s key innovation was to take the wriggly, rough-hewn style of Chicago house and sand down its edges, giving looped funk basslines both sensuous heft and Gallic panache.
Such sound sculpture helped give birth to French Touch, a wildly influential production style whose luxe detailing continues to resonate through dance music. And their 2013 opus Random Access Memories helped kick off that decade’s disco revival, pairing Pharrell Williams with Chic legend Nile Rodgers on the pop juggernaut “Get Lucky” and enlisting Julian Casablancas and Panda Bear for other supple vocal turns. Even after announcing their breakup in 2021, Daft Punk continue to ripple through space and time with tracks that still feel impossibly catchy and cool.
