A singer of hard-boiled indie-rock laments—armed with a bluesy baldness—she plays tough, quiet guitar, often using explosive drum hits as punctuation points, as on “The Calcination of Scout Niblett” and “Gun.” “Can't Fool Me Now,” from 2013, sweetens her intensity with dramatic strings, and “Kiss” is both scathing indie and passionate deep soul. The unvarnished “Lucy Lucifer” is a dark incantation set to skeletal percussion, while “Kidnapped By Neptune” adds girl-group innocence to its unsettlingly minimal funk.
