Combining the rollercoaster structure and bludgeoning bass of dubstep with the cathartic roar of metal and other left-field genre incursions, Graeme Duffy crafts thoughtfully visceral music as PhaseOne. After cutting his teeth in the 2010s both alone and with like-minded DJs—such as 12th Planet and BARELY ALIVE on 2017’s aptly named “Send It”—the Sydney native made a major impact with 2019’s Transcendency. For that guest-stacked debut album, Duffy recruited heavy-hitting veterans (including Northlane on the guitar-laced “Crash & Burn”) alongside fellow bassheads (Subtronics on the video-game-esque “Demon Hunter”) and even ’90s-era rappers Bone Thugs-N-Harmony (the brooding “Ultima”). He dug even deeper into those collabs with a remix record the next year, before going toe-to-toe with fellow Australians like metalcore crew Polaris (“Icarus”) and alt-rockers RedHook (“Gangrene”) in 2023. Duffy has been prolific yet reliable with his remixes and other teamups since then, tapping Banks Arcade for 2025’s quaking “Pulse,” and Intervals and Micah Martin for the same year’s slower yet no less crushing “Divide.” Between big programmed hooks and momentous guest vocals, he knows how to achieve the best kind of sensory overload.
