Singer-songwriter and composer Hrishikesh Hirway has been creating music since he was 19, but after two incidents at his shows where patrons were questioning whether he made “Indian” music, Hirway decided to adopt the stage name The One AM Radio. “It felt like my name and my identity were roadblocks to people listening to my music without some sort of preconceived notion—my name was coloring in the picture before people heard a note—so I decided to perform under a moniker instead,” he tells Apple Music. I felt I owed it to myself and my identity to leave behind the chapter where I had obscured that part of me in order to present something more palatable for an American audience.
