Though born and raised in New York City, Mtendere Mandowa, the DJ and producer known as Teebs, came to the world's attention after moving to Los Angeles and immersing himself in the head-nodding club night, Low End Theory, and music of Brainfeeder Records. Like his associates Flying Lotus and Prefuse 73, Mandowa's work has a dreamlike quality that meshes hazy hip-hop with ambient and new age elements. His albums, '10's Ardour and '14's Estara, are multi-layered affairs that pay tribute to his Malawian and Barbadian roots, while also sounding like messages from a faraway planet.
