Art Tatum Essentials

Recording and performing until his untimely death at 47 in 1959, piano great Art Tatum had lightning-quick reflexes, incredible dexterity, and uncanny split-second decision-making skills that situated him as one of jazz's most influential musicians. Known particularly for his “stride” technique, Tatum bounced back and forth across the keyboard with an airy, improvisational grace that almost defied gravity (“Body and Soul,” “Tiger Rag”). Pleasantly meandering and yet hyper-focused tracks like “I Ain't Got Nobody” and “Humoresque” help us get inside his mind, a place of luminescent creativity and wit.
