Yitai Wang’s New Year Playlist
Playlist - 22 Songs
As the Year of the Snake approaches, Yitai Wang has one wish for himself: “I hope to make more good music.” It’s a reasonable resolution for the rapper—in 2024, he released an ambitious concept album Love Me Later, recorded over two years with a host of international collaborators. Describing the idea behind his Lunar New Year playlist, he sets the scene: “I started off with the aim of picking a list you could play throughout your celebration,” says the Chengdu-based artist. “It would begin on a morning filled with excited expectations and accompany you until the fireworks at the end of the night. Each song is a favorite of mine, of course. I recommend listening to them in order.”
Following Wang’s advice, the day begins on a wistful note with Beyoncé’s distinctive take on The Beatles and a R&B lament from Tamia before the party kicks off in earnest, with hopping beats from Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar among others. The festivities are ushered to a hopeful conclusion with the tender, Rhodes-led “Ottolenghi” from Loyle Carner and Jordan Rakei. You’ll also spot some of Wang’s own cuts, like “Rich Forever,” a collaboration with Rich The Kid and Armani White. Naturally, there are some holiday sounds in the mix, too. “There’s got to be a New Year atmosphere,” Wang says. “At home, I hang lanterns, paste up couplets beside the door, and hand out red envelopes.”
