Sam Fischer may have studied at Boston’s famed Berklee College of Music, but the Australian expat found himself luckless once he had relocated to Los Angeles with dreams of making it big. He vented his frustration on the 2019 pop ballad “This City,” which went viral and eventually scored multiplatinum sales in several countries. It also earned Fischer the record deal he had moved to California seeking in the first place, and he answered that early promise with 2021’s Demi Lovato duet “What Other People Say,” another bittersweet whoop of catharsis inspired by that same city. Fischer confirmed his talent for tapping into universal emotion on the same year’s “Hopeless Romantic,” before crafting 2022’s “Carry It Well” as a classic-sounding piano ballad with some distinctly modern lyrics. As beautifully as he conveys loneliness and longing, Fischer works quite well with collaborators, either as a writer for hire or a singing partner. He enlisted the talents of Amy Shark (“High on You”) and Meghan Trainor (“Alright”) in 2023 alone, and brought swooning emotion to Guy Sebastian’s “Antidote” in 2024. Meanwhile, he continued to balance the intimate and the epic with the rousing choral flourishes of “LOVELIFE” and the country twang of “Moonshine,” both from 2025.
