Tokyo quartet JUN SKY WALKER(S) have long been a key band in Japanese popular music; they meld punk spirit to arena-ready sing-along rock. From their earliest recordings in the late ‘80s through the new tracks on their 30th-anniversary album, Junska builds a scaffold of guitar and drums, topped off by Kazuya Miyata's shambling vocals. Their chugging numbers always deliver a chorus made for unison shouting, punctuated by “oi” and “whoa” on “Let's Go Hibari-hills” and “Aruiteikou”. They nail the right balance between pop catchiness and underground energy, helping elevate both approaches in their home country during the ‘90s.
