LA-based duo Magdalena Bay’s kaleidoscopic sound—a mix of soft-focus pop hooks and sleek electronic production from all across the musical map—looks as much to the future as it does the warm nostalgia of the past. Formed by high school friends and now life partners Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin, the group weaves elements of ’70s disco, ’80s pop rock and synth-pop, ’90s dance, a little new jack swing, and modern house and techno with lyrics that are playful, personal, and introspective. On the chill “Image,” Tenenbaum considers a life deeply altered by tech, and over a low-slung beat on “Chaeri,” she pleads with a struggling friend. Yet it’s on the more romantic tracks (“Fear, Sex,” “Death & Romance,” “Killshot”) where the pair find their sweet spot, allowing the highs and lows of relationships to play out on the dance floor in splendidly stylish fashion.
