Since breaking out in the mid-2000s, Perth-raised polymath Tim Minchin has juggled the roles of songwriter, comedian, pianist, actor, and writer. After developing his comedy persona over a series of live albums—typified by 2009’s ginger-proud “Prejudice” and Bible-skewering “The Good Book”—he penned the music and lyrics for 2010’s Matilda the Musical, balancing pathos and quirk in tunes like “When I Grow Up.” Meanwhile, Minchin continued to poke and prod the sacred cow of Christianity on a 2011 live album with a 55-piece orchestra. Observe that record’s “Thank You God” and the expletive-laden “Pope Song,” as well as his later condemnation of an Australian figurehead with 2016’s “Come Home (Cardinal Pell).” That same year, he adapted the 1993 film Groundhog Day as a stage musical, yielding gorgeous tunes like “If I Had My Time Again” amid the comic tumult. Minchin has continued his signature irreverence via winking tunes like 2020’s “Airport Piano,” only to tackle the theme of flying from a strikingly different angle with 2022’s acoustic guitar ballad “The Aeroplane.” He has also periodically circled back to big, brassy piano numbers, including 2025’s “The Song of the Masochist.” Whether rocking out, cracking wise, or sharing his more sincere side, Minchin’s resounding vocals and intricate lyrics are always a thing to savor.
