Plaintive and potent, Skeeter Davis’ voice added a twangy, Appalachian edge to the understated, polished Nashville Sound-era songs that the Kentucky country-pop singer turned into hits—an edge appreciated by unlikely fans from Bob Dylan to Lou Reed to Michael Stipe. The most famous of those songs is her iconic ode to melodrama, “The End of the World,” which has been covered numerous times and referenced in pop culture across the decades. But Davis was prolific as a songwriter as well as a singer, one of the few women (then as now) able to cut through in mostly male Music Row and offer a fresher perspective.
