British boy band East 17 formed while the four members were still attending school in East London's Walthamstow district. Naming themselves after the local postcode--even going as far as calling their first album WALTHAMSTOW--they were marketed as an urban, R&B counterpoint to the polished dance-pop of Take That. The group became one of the most successful U.K. chart acts of the '90s, most notably when their 1994 single, "Stay Another Day," secured the coveted Christmas number-one spot.
