Italian Eurodance outfit Corona scored one of the most memorable dance hits of the ’90s with “The Rhythm of the Night.”
• Corona producer Francesco Bontempi met Brazilian singer and model Olga de Souza in Rome and decided to form a new project, Corona, with her as the centerpiece.
• Their 1993 debut single, “The Rhythm of the Night,” features vocals from Giovanna Bersola, aka Jenny B. The stage-shy singer was never credited—Olga de Souza remained the face of Corona.
• “The Rhythm of the Night” became a massive hit in Europe, topping the Italian charts and reaching No. 2 in the UK. The song eventually made its way to America and peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1995.
• The group’s follow-up single, “Baby Baby” (featuring vocals from British singer Sandra Chambers), again topped the Italian charts and went Top 5 in the UK.
• Corona notched one more Top 10 UK hit with “Try Me Out,” another offering from the group’s debut album, The Rhythm of the Night.
• Neither 1998’s Walking On Music nor 2000’s And Me U (credited to Corona X) matched the success of their early work.
• Corona returned in 2010 with Y Generation. Olga de Souza cowrote every track.
