Informed by the sheer overload of internet culture, Shinsei Kamattechan followed in the footsteps of such bustling indie-rock ensembles as Broken Social Scene and Los Campesinos! when they formed in 2007 in Chiba, Japan. Their 2010 debut Tomodachi Wo Koroshite Made spanned snide pop-punk, gnashing alt-rock, and vibrant electronics, with sharp turns from melodic to discordant (and back again), and lead vocalist Ryōsuke Ōshima, aka Noko, sometimes descending into pure screaming. They have since integrated buoyant samples (2014’s Hero Syndrome), dabbled in rap (2019’s Child’s Medical Record), penned songs for anime series (2021’s “Boku no Sensou”), and introduced sweeping background choirs (2025’s Danchi Thesis). Even as their music has gotten slicker and more pop over the years, it has remained as defiantly unpredictable as ever.
