Discovered as a teenager by French hip-hop veteran Booba, Belgian rapper Shay has cultivated a loyal following in France and Belgium.
• Shay was introduced to music as a child by her family. She’s the granddaughter of trailblazing Congolese rumba singer Tabu Ley Rochereau and the niece of French Congolese conscious rapper Youssoupha.
• By the early 2010s, Shay had begun recording music with her brother, singer and producer Le Motif, who frequently tapped her to sing over his beats.
• In 2011, a video of Shay performing a song she made with her brother found its way to Booba. Impressed, he reached out to her, and soon after, Shay and Booba released the joint single “Cruella.”
• Shay delivered her 2016 debut album, Jolie garce, through Booba’s 92i Records. Its bold lead single, “PMW,” earned a platinum certification in France.
• Shay’s 2019 sophomore effort, Antidote, peaked at No. 5 on the Belgian Albums Chart. The single “Liquide,” a collaboration with French MC Niska, went gold in France.
