Artist Biography
Mixing folk rock with a dash of Merseybeat influence, The Seekers were among the most internationally renowned bands to come out of Australia in the ’60s. The group evolved out of the Melbourne-based doo-wop act The Escorts in 1962, with singer Ken Ray, guitarist/vocalists Keith Potger and Bruce Woodley, and bassist/vocalist Athol Guy. When Ray left soon after, The Seekers’ classic lineup was completed with the arrival of singer Judith Durham. Their first single was “Waltzing Matilda,” a 1963 update of a traditional Australian song, but it was the second, “I’ll Never Find Another You,” that made them stars in 1965. Written by Dusty Springfield’s brother Tom, the global hit showed off the group’s mix of catchy 12-string acoustic-guitar riffs and rich, Mamas & Papas-like four-part vocal harmonies. They continued racking up hits over the next few years, the biggest being 1966’s “Georgy Girl,” the theme from the now-classic British film of the same name. The group split after Durham went solo in 1968 but reformed without her in 1975, continuing until 1988. A 1992 reunion including Durham lasted until her 2019 retirement, after which the remaining members continued with replacement Michael Cristiano as The Original Seekers.
