About The Manhattan Transfer
Artist Biography
Acclaimed vocal ensemble the Manhattan Transfer are recognized for bringing the harmonized vocal jazz and traditional pop of the 1940s back to modern audiences. Drawing upon the tradition of groups like Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, the quartet emerged in the '70s weaving vintage-inspired boogie-woogie, bop, and vocalese with contemporary pop and R&B influences. They broke through with 1979's Extensions, winning a Grammy Award for "Birdland." With 1981's Mecca for Moderns, they also became the first group to win Grammys in both the pop and jazz categories in the same year. Along with their numerous awards, they have consistently landed in the Top 20 of the jazz charts with albums like 2000's The Spirit of St. Louis (a tribute to Louis Armstrong), 2009's The Chick Corea Songbook, and 2019's The Junction. In 2022, the group celebrated their 50th birthday with Fifty, revisiting some of their favorite songs alongside Germany's WDR Funkhausorchester.
