Also a Carter Family, though with no ancestral connection to the other more legendary clan, this country/gospel vocal group similarly established themselves with their fine family harmony singing. Initially performing as the Carter Quartet, led by the charismatic ‘Dad’ Carter, they were rechristened the Chuck Wagon Gang and made their first recordings for Columbia Records in 1936. When they found that the majority of their fans were requesting gospel numbers, they gradually changed over to exclusively that genre. The Chuck Wagon Gang made their first major tour in 1951 and never looked back, playing to enthusiatic crowds all over the country for the next 70-plus years. It is estimated that sales of their records, in the U.S. and overseas, are in excess of 30 million.
