Artist Biography
Lacking something in originality (critics noted a particular debt to early Deep Purple), Swiss outfit the Black Angels went some way towards remedying their shortcomings through sheer energy and self-belief. Hell Machine, their 1981 debut for Meteor Records, was the superior of their two efforts, despite some agonizingly clichéd lyrics. Clive Murray (vocals), Harry Stone (keyboards), Andy McKay (guitar), Mark Egg (guitar), Walt Lion (bass), and Brian Irving (drums) attempted to produce a more blended, complex sound for 1984's Kickdown, but the resulting tracks lacked the spirit of old. With minimal sales and profound disinterest from European critics, the band had broken up by the following year. [Not to be confused with the U.S. indie rock band of the same name.]
