Mandopop may be popular in Malaysia, but a Malay artist breaking into the Chinese market was pretty much unheard of until Shila Amzah won the Asian Wave singing competition in 2012, and released several hits in multiple languages. As the daughter of pop legend ND Lala, the singer-songwriter had quite the shadow to step out of; but the 2018 Forbes “30 Under 30 Asia” alum might now just be the bigger act. Her melodious, multilingual range has proven hugely popular at home and beyond.
