About M83
Artist Biography
Taking their name from a galaxy 15 million light-years from Earth, M83 revels in the power of big synths and even bigger feelings. Led by the 1980-born French composer and songwriter Anthony Gonzalez, the electronic band started in 2001 in Antibes and has since explored the power of romance and nostalgia in high-gloss pop anthems, shoegaze-textured soundscapes, and understated movie scores. Originally a duo featuring Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau, M83 first got attention in indie circles for the tenderness of their 2003 album, Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts. When Fromageau left the group shortly after, Gonzalez pressed on, releasing three more albums before moving to Los Angeles and teaming with a sprawling cast of collaborators to record 2011’s Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming. The synth-pop opus and its heart-melting, saxophone-garnished lead single, “Midnight City,” rocketed to the top of critics’ year-end lists and earned a Grammy nomination in the Best Alternative Album category. Since then, Gonzalez has dabbled in more experimental sounds, composing for films and Cirque du Soleil, and drawing on the music of vintage video games for M83’s subdued 2019 effort, DSVII. Whatever the format or inspiration, M83 continues as a beacon for intimate expression with an epic scope.
