With 1995's "I Got 5 On It," the Bay Area rap duo Luniz (pronounced “loonies”) created one of hip-hop’s all-time great stoner anthems.
• Luniz members Yukmouth and Numskull began rapping together in middle school. They were originally in a group called BWP—Brothers With Potential.
• Luniz reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 with their 1995 debut single, “I Got 5 On It,” a song about splitting a $10 dimebag of weed.
• “I Got 5 On It” was the lead single off Operation Stackola, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
• In 1995, Luniz collaborated with Chaka Khan, Charlie Wilson, Coolio, Shaquille O’Neal, and Yo-Yo on “Stomp,” a Grammy-nominated song from Quincy Jones’ experimental genre-blending album Q’s Jook Joint.
• Luniz separated after their third album, 2002’s Silver & Black, but have since reunited for two more projects: 2015’s High Timez mixtape and 2018’s No Pressure album.
• Composer Michael Abels put a ghastly spin on “I Got 5 On It” for Jordan Peele’s acclaimed 2019 horror film Us.
