About Chico DeBarge
Artist Biography
Chico DeBarge knows a thing or two about inheriting the legacy of a musical family. Born in 1966, he was a younger brother of the fraternal singing quartet DeBarge, and followed his siblings onto the Motown roster in the late ’80s with songs like “Talk to Me” and “Kiss Serious.” However, in 1988, at the height of his career, DeBarge was arrested on drug charges and sentenced to six years in prison, where he wrote the songs that would end up on his first post-release effort, 1997’s Long Time No See. Trading in ’80s synths for the slick, jazzy textures of neo-soul, Long Time No See is an exploration of time: “Love Still Good” questions whether his lover would stay faithful while he was locked away, while “Iggin Me” responds with the harsh truth that life didn’t stop for those on the outside. In 2009, he released Addiction, a diaristic offering of the vices he has been running from for most of his life.
