Cuts
Album · Rock · 2005
Lo-fi Kiwi punkers Toy Love formed in 1978 out of the ashes of The Enemy, a scrappy bunch of Sex Pistols–obsessed teens from Dunedin led by Chris Knox and Alec Bathgate. While The Enemy reveled in punk's deliberate amateurism and willful antagonism, Toy Love found Knox and Bathgate adopting a slightly more subtle approach to songwriting and performance. Even so, much of Toy Love’s early repertoire was made up of former Enemy songs like “Wanna Die with You," “I Don’t Mind," and “Pull Down the Shades.” The last is a beautifully simple three-chord basher about the pervasive boredom of Aotearoa New Zealand adolescence; it burns with the desperate immediacy of the best teenage rock 'n' roll. Cuts is a two-disc set that collects the entirety of Toy Love’s studio output from 1978 to 1980, as well as a handful of stray live cuts. It's startling to hear the band evolve from the brutally simple punk of “Frogs” and “Lust" to the sharp, concise power pop of “Amputee Song.” Toy Love's tenure as an active recording outfit was brief; Knox and Bathgate would later record as Tall Dwarfs. Still, Toy Love has attained a near-legendary status among fans of Aotearoa New Zealand pop.
