About KT Tunstall
Artist Biography
Since arriving on the scene with her Mercury Prize–nominated 2004 debut, Eye to the Telescope, Scottish singer-songwriter KT Tunstall has experimented with various genres, including folk, electronica, country, and rock.
• The Edinburgh native grew up loving space and sci-fi thanks to her frequent trips to St. Andrews Observatory with her physicist father and her brothers.
• As a youngster, Tunstall played piano and flute. She developed her singing by listening to Ella Fitzgerald. In her teens, she took up songwriting and taught herself guitar.
• Eye to the Telescope went platinum in the US and multi-platinum in the UK. The album features the singles “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” and “Suddenly I See.” The latter reached No. 12 on the UK charts—still her career best—and just missed the Top 20 in America.
• ”Suddenly I See” has been featured in TV series and films like The Devil Wears Prada, Ugly Betty, The Hills, and Grey’s Anatomy.
• In 2006, Tunstall won Best British Female Solo Artist at the BRIT Awards. The following year, “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” received a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
• Tunstall’s 2007 sophomore effort, Drastic Fantastic, debuted inside the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart. It remains her highest US chart position.
• In 2018, Tunstall released her sixth album, WAX, the second installment in a trilogy of thematic albums centering on the soul, body, and mind.
