About Divinyls
Artist Biography
In America, Divinyls are known primarily for the gleaming 1991 pop hit “I Touch Myself,” a sexually empowered love note driven by the expressive vocals of Chrissy Amphlett. However, the band had been established hitmakers in their native Australia for a decade by the time that song became a success. Amphlett and guitarist Mark McEntee founded Divinyls in 1980 and reached the Top 10 soon after with their hard-rock-leaning debut single, “Boys In Town,” which reflected the band’s fondness for AC/DC. More hits followed, including the synth-heavy New Wave rocker “Science Fiction” and the moodier “Pleasure and Pain”; the latter especially showcased Amphlett’s smoky, urgent voice. Following the success of “I Touch Myself,” the band enjoyed continued popularity in Australia through the mid-’90s, highlighted by the smoldering Melrose Place: The Music cut “I’m Jealous,” and were inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame in 2006. Sadly, Amphlett passed away from breast cancer in 2013.
