There’s a sense of hard-won maturity evident in the tracks on Amy Grant’s Somewhere Down the Road. The album combines newly written songs with previously unreleased material and tracks found on earlier albums. The new tunes are serious and thought provoking, with “Overnight” (a duet with Amy’s 17-year-old daughter Sarah Chapman), “Unafraid” (a multi-generational message of encouragement), and “Better Than a Hallelujah” (an acknowledgement of human frailty and God’s love) sounding particularly strong. The recordings from Grant’s vaults have more than archival value — “What Is the Chance of That” rocks with Sheryl Crow-like energy, while “Come Into My World” is a stark, intense glimpse of emotional need. Also of interest is a re-recording of “Arms of Love,” first heard on 1982’s Age to Age. The grown-up perspective she brings to this uplifting pop hymn sets the tone for the album and reminds us just how far Grant has come — and how much more she has to say.
