Named after the grizzled literary alter-ego of Charles Bukowski, Czech pop rockers Chinaski prove it to be an ironic moniker. Their style has an easy pace, augmented with acoustic strumming, plaintive piano or the brighter parp of brass. “Duše z gumy” goes for a trip-hop groove, while “Stiznost” picks up the rhythm with bracing power chords. But all have a road-worn feel from the vocals of Michal Malátný: whether croaking at a whisper, or belting out the chorus (often in harmony with fellow guitarist František Táborský), his sonorous tones make Chinaski’s songs never less than captivating.
