Rapper Yung Miami’s music is driven by an uninhibited take on female empowerment and independence. Born Caresha Brownlee in 1994 in her namesake city, the artist grew up listening to R&B artists like Pretty Ricky and Destiny’s Child, but later became interested in rapping after her friend—and eventual partner in the duo City Girls—JT encouraged her to pursue the path alongside her. Yung Miami’s hip-hop career began in 2017, with a feature on the breakthrough City Girls single “Fu*k Dat Ni**a,” an unapologetically ambitious song that set the tone for Yung Miami’s eventual style. By 2019, the MC began appearing as a featured artist on tracks like Cousin Stizz’s love song in rap form, “Perfect.” In 2021, Yung Miami co-released the Miami bass-influenced single “Strub tha Ground” with her Quality Control labelmate Quavo of the Atlanta hip-hop trio Migos. Yung Miami would go on to drop her first official solo track in 2021, the subversive, braggadocious, and carnal “Rap Freaks.”
