You could say success came out of the “blue” for the Chinese-Canadian singer-songwriter yung kai. The Vancouver-based artist—aka Max Zhang—was among the hundreds of thousands of creators uploading covers and original compositions on social media when his August 2024 bedroom pop single “blue” went viral. It turned the artist, who was then still in college, into an overnight internet sensation.
Music has always been a big part of yung kai’s life. He learned to play the drums, piano and guitar as a child, and started a career in production and sharing beats before he began writing and recording songs.
Influenced by artists as diverse as jazz-pop vocalist Laufey and K-rock band wave to earth, and inspired by Chinese and Korean dramas, yung kai’s soothing and dreamy blend of pop and R&B has resonated with millions of listeners, especially in south-east Asia. The global popularity of his tunes led to him being signed by talent management agency Wasserman and being booked for the 2025 editions of festivals such as Wanderland in Manila, LaLaLa in Jakarta and 88rising’s Head in the Clouds in Los Angeles.
