Once called the most successful Dutch pop group of all time, the Eurodance quartet Vengaboys had a string of international dance hits in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
• Vengaboys originated with Dutch DJs Danski and Delmundo, who got their start hosting illegal beach parties in Spain.
• The group changed its focus in 1997 when Danski and Delmundo took on a behind-the-scenes role and recruited Kim Sasabone, Denise Post-Van Rijswijk, Roy den Burger, and Robin Pors, supposedly after meeting them at one of their beach parties the summer before.
• After releasing a pair of songs in 1997, the group broke through in 1998 with “Up & Down,” a No. 5 hit in the Netherlands (No. 4 in the UK) and the first of seven consecutive Top 10 singles.
• Vengaboys reached the top of the charts at home and in the UK with their 1998 singles “Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom” and “We’re Going to Ibiza” (a reworking of the 1975 hit “Barbados” by Typically Tropical). Both songs came from that year’s The Party Album.
• The group snapped their Top 10 streak in 2000 with “Cheekah Bow Bow (That Computer Song),” which stalled out at No. 32 in the Netherlands and No. 19 in the UK.
• Pors had left the group in 1999 in pursuit of a solo career and was replaced by Yorrick Bakker. Post-Van Rijswijk and Bakker left in 2002 after a disappointing reception for Vengaboys’ 2001 single “Forever as One.” Though the group added new members Lynn Bartels and Mark Jong a Pin, Vengaboys went dormant in 2004.
• A version of the group reunited in 2006 and resumed releasing music in 2010 with the single “Rocket to Uranus,” which peaked at No. 21 in the Netherlands. The lineup since 2009 has featured Sasabone, Post-Van Rijswijk, Pors, and new member Donny Latupeirissa.
