About Tony Scott
Artist Biography
Tony Scott studied clarinet at the Juilliard School of Music, and during the late 1940s made his living playing in big bands and as a sideman in mainstream groups. Although bop and the clarinet were uneasy bedfellows, Scott built a reputation through the '50s as one of the best new players on his instrument. He also acted as an arranger and musical director for several singers, including Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan. In 1959 he recorded the remarkably forward-looking SUNG HEROES with Bill Evans, Scott La Faro, and Paul Motian, but the same year left America, tired of music business racism. Scott spent six years travelling Europe and the Orient, incorporating elements of ethnic music into his repertoire.
