Preferring game consoles to DJ booths, German producer TheFatRat made his name as a copyright-free music source beloved by gamers and YouTube creators around the world.
• Before releasing music as TheFatRat, Christian Büttner made background music for TV, commercials, and radio under his own name. He also coproduced “Mignon Mignon”—a chart-topping 2010 French hit by the virtual singing mole René la Taupe—and rapper Lupe Fiasco’s 2012 track “Audubon Ballroom.”
• TheFatRat’s 2014 single “Unity” typifies his signature mix of retro chiptune blips, highly produced electronic boom-baps, and annunciated vocals. When El Salvadorian YouTuber Fernanfloo used “Unity” in an intro, TheFatRat's popularity sky-rocketed.
• Quite fittingly, TheFatRat’s music has been used in actual video games, including Rocket League and Dota 2.
Influenced by TheFatRatTheFatRat has influenced the music of DASÛ, Soheil Bahrami, SteelStep and more.
