One of the leading bands of the 1980s Singaporean Chinese folk (or xinyao) movement, The Straws (水草三重唱) vividly set imagery of vintage Singapore to easy melodies that embrace their Chinese heritage. Acoustic guitars are often the bedrock for the trio’s strong harmonies as they explore social commentary and muse on the value of togetherness and friendship. After disbanding in 1987, two members, Billy Koh and Ng Guan Seng, went on to found Ocean Butterflies, enabling the true spirit of The Straws to live on via the Singapore-based record company that went on to nurture the careers of Stefanie Sun and JJ Lin, as well as new generations of local Mandopop talent.
