R&B/Soul
New Orleans supergroup The Neville Brothers—Aaron, Art, Charles, and Cyril—were the premier representatives of their hometown’s magnificent musical culture for four decades. R&B rocker Art and angel-voiced Aaron led the charge as regional celebs during the ’60s, and the four siblings eventually coalesced while backing Mardi Gras Indian outfit The Wild Tchoupitoulas in 1976. Blending doo-wop, funk, gospel, rhythm ‘n’ blues, and Mardi Gras rhythms, the foursome became local favorites. They released their eponymous debut album as The Neville Brothers in 1978 but made a national impact with 1981’s rootsier Fiyo on the Bayou. In 1989, their spotty recording history finally bore fruit with the Daniel Lanois-produced Yellow Moon and its Rosa Parks tribute, “Sister Rosa.” After disbanding in 2012, the Nevilles returned to the annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival—which they had traditionally closed for nearly two decades—to stage an emotional final farewell in 2015, prior to Charles’ death in 2018 and Art’s the following year.
