The Necks are a piano trio from Sydney, Australia. While they have drawn favorable comparisons to Krautrock groups like Can and Faust, they inhabit their own unique terrain. Pianist Chris Abrahams, bassist Lloyd Swanton, and drummer Tony Buck usually offer single, basic, melodic and rhythmic figures repeated over an extended period of time that transform into something else entirely as sonic, textural, and musical variations are introduced. Whether in the gentle, trance-like grooves of 1989's Sex, the undulating exchange of synth and piano in 2003's Drive By, the space rock of 2004's Hanging Gardens, or the wandering atmospherics in 2023's Travel, the Necks remain dynamic. In 2024 they issued Bleed, a 42-minute single composition examining the beauty of decay.
