Artist Biography
Led by French guitarist Yvan Serrano (aka DJ Healer Selecta) -- and part of his Raison d’Etre London band collective -- rock & roll, Surf and rhythm & blues revivalists the Dustaphonics were formed in 2008.
The lineup was completed by powerhouse vocalists Aina Roxx, Kay Elizabeth, Hayley Red, Dan Whaley, John GIbbs, on bass, and either Bruce Brand (ex-Milkshakes/Headcoats) Eric Frajria, Mark Clayton, Mike Thorne on drums.
The Dustaphonics' first single, "Burlesque Queen," was issued in 2010 on retro London label Dirty Water ("taking music backwards into tomorrow"). The sleazy R&B grinder was co-written by Serrano and Tura Satana, star of Russ Meyer's 1965 cult flick Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, and served as a precursor of what to expect from their debut album released the following year. Party Girl (2011) fizzed with an exuberant mix of R&B, rock & roll, rockabilly, soul, surf, and garage, capturing the energy and verve of their revue-style live shows. The LP included a cover of MC5's "Looking at You," and Bo Diddley featured on the intro of the closing track, "Take It from Diddley." Diddley was not the only name to enthuse over the band. The Dustaphonics also found favor with the queen of rockabilly, Wanda Jackson, and soul star Spanky Wilson. Sophomore album Big Smoke London Town (2014) continued the theme with ten self-penned tracks of lively vintage sounds, plus a cover of Louisiana Red's "Ride on Louisiana Red." As their reputation began to grow so did the starry associations: the band backed Blues Brother Dan Akroyd on stage, and also opened for Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. 2016 saw the release of Johnny & Bo, whose title track was a tribute to one of Serrano's chief influences, Bo Diddley. ~ Matthew Garbutt
