One of many groups shepherded by producer Joe Meek, Liverpool's the Cryin' Shames existed only long enough to release two singles in 1966. Haunting ballads "Please Stay" and "Nobody Waved Goodbye" were examples of Meek's otherworldly sound design, while the B-sides chased trends of the day by emulating Dylan or Merseybeat. The band splintered shortly after the release of these songs, but their music lived on, appearing on various compilations. An anthology, Paul & Ritchie & the Cryin' Shames: Please Stay, appeared in 2024.
