The Ancients are an intergenerational modern free jazz trio. Their members, saxophonist/multi-instrumentalist Isaiah Collier, bassist William Parker, and drummer William Hooker assembled to play concerts in conjunction with Milford Graves' Mind Body Deal exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art Los Angeles. Following those shows, the trio realized the high level of intimate language in collective improvisation, and decided to form a band. They recorded wholly improvised jazz concerts at the 2220 Arts and Archives in Los Angeles and at The Chapel in San Francisco. In January 2025, Michael Ehlers' Eremite label issued the double-LP The Ancients, which offered four side-long improvisations.
