About Thabsie
Genre
R&B/Soul
Mingling neo-soul and R&B flavors with modern trap, house, and Afrobeat, South African singer Thabsie has proven herself versatile in a multitude of settings. Born Bathabise Biyela in Cape Town in 1991, she grew up singing in church before lending backing vocals to other artists. After her smoldering turn on rapper Kwesta’s 2016 single “Ngiyaz’fela Ngawe”—a smash hit in their shared home country— Thabsie released her 2017 debut album. Songs About You saw her explore cultural identity on “African Queen” and the threat of xenophobia on “2 AM.” Since then, she has balanced striking solo material like 2019’s heartfelt “Sphesihle” (a Zulu term for “beautiful gift”) with nailing vocal hooks as a guest for such artists as Faith K, DJ Hudson, and Lucky Keyz.
