Named for the hometown where they formed in 2019, Sydney Yungins instantly surged to the frontlines of the flourishing drill scene in the city’s Inner West district with their debut single, “Who You With.” Brimming with street-schooled attitude and violent vignettes, the track kicked off a string of heavily streamed singles that filtered the raw sound of UK drill through the shared Pacific Island heritage and outsider perspectives of MCs Rico Tonga, Titoez, and Hefty2161. But after the latter was replaced by Leli SK, Sydney Yungins exhibited a more club-ready energy on the 2021 singles “Howdy” and “Eshays,” both of which unload rapid-fire rhymes over jacked-up hip-house beats. And with “Dead Wrong,” the trio showcase a more delicate and sensitive side, offsetting frantic verses with a laidback, melodic chorus hook over an acoustic-inflected trap production.
