In the artist’s words:
Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. My first gypsy jazz gig came when I was asked to fill in for a bassist in a Copenhagen group. The way the rhythm section locked in was a revelation. I was buzzing for days, and it opened the door to a whole new way of playing.
What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Biréli Lagrène, WDR Big Band - Djangology / Solo - To Bi or Not to Bi Milt Jackson, Wes Montgomery, Keepnews Collection: Bags Meets Wes Tchan-Tchou Vidal, Tchan-Tchou Vidal : La gitane and Greatest Hits (Remastered) Tchan Tchou Vidal showed me how gypsy jazz could have deep soul. Bags Meets Wes! blends hard bop with swinging guitars. Mingus Ah Um is pure energy and creativity. Together, these albums shaped how I approach jazz and swing.
Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Seul Ce Soir” Seul Ce Soir’ is a beautiful, nostalgic tune, and we were thrilled when Woody Allen used our version in Midnight in Paris. It captures everything we love about gypsy jazz—the romance, the swing, and the storytelling within the notes.
What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? Playing at the Midnight in Paris pre-premiere, just days after my mother's passing, with the new line up (Swing 41 had disbanded), and hearing our music on the big screen. Surreal! We had no idea the film would go on to win an Oscar and Grammy.
Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? I’d love to record and perform more gypsy jazz with great musicians, blending tradition with new ideas. Playing at the Django Reinhardt Festival in Samois and touring internationally with a string swing quartet are high on my list.
