About Subculture Sage
Artist Biography
Genre-hopping U.K. rap duo Subculture Sage filter a multitude of influences through a hip-hop lens before pairing it with razor-sharp lyrics. With their breakthrough eponymous debut EP in 2014, they strongly affirmed themselves as magpies of the scene, pulling in elements of tropical bass, ambient electronics, and dub to create a sound unique to their tastes.
Producer Subculture Sounds and MC Hypeman Sage both grew up in North London around the same time, but it wasn't until 2012 -- and an introduction via a mutual friend -- that they crossed paths. Previously Subculture had been making beats by himself, and had just reached the stage where he felt an MC could enhance his work, and so was introduced to Sage, who had been MC'ing drum'n'bass from a young age. They bonded creatively straightaway, and wasted no time in writing and recording material. The bright and bouncy mechanics of Subculture Sage were exemplified by their early cuts, but they retained the unmistakable mark of London's rap scene. Subsequent releases, such as the 2014 mixtape Big Smoke Autumn Blues and the TAKE 3 EP, solidified them as innovators in London-based rap. Their initial releases were relatively light on features, although they did support a select few up-and-coming artists, including DORJ, Tertia May, and Illa Man. That changed on 2018's Niccolo's Dead, which featured U.K. hip-hop legends Foreign Beggars on the closing track. The EP also referenced grime and U.K. drill as they took their sound in a significantly darker direction. ~ Liam Martin
