Stone Alliance is a group consisting, most notably, of saxophonist Steve Grossman, bassist Gene Perla, and drummer/percussionist Don Alias. Much like Weather Report, Lifetime, and Return to Forever, Stone Alliance were in the same vein of the "supergroup" trend of the '70s. They were known for their blend of Afro-Cuban and funk rhythms with elements of rock and pop, in addition to the often-torrential solos from Grossman. Stone Alliance went on to record four studio albums (between 1976 and 1980) and release four live albums. Following a European tour, the group broke up but was soon re-formed by Alias and Perla. After a hiatus, they reconvened in the mid-'90s as the trio of Alias, Perla, and guitarist Mitch Stein.
