The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra has been widely recognized for its efforts to engage with the wider community, including Native Americans. The group has benefited from residencies by national and even international figures such as Paul Moravec, Steven Stucky, and Midori. The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1922 at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, and it remains headquartered in that city. South Dakota Symphony Orchestra concerts are heard by some 50,000 people annually, including 18,000 children. Especially prominent among the orchestra's activities has been its engagement with a variety of communities around the state of South Dakota. The centerpiece of this effort is the orchestra's Lakota Music Project, developed in conjunction with musicians from the Lakota and Dakota tribes. Continuing under music director Delta David Gier, the Lakota Music Project was the impetus behind an album of the same name, released in 2022.
