Sophie B. Hawkins began to develop her musical talent at the age of nine, taking drum lessons at an East Harlem jazz school. A chance meeting with Marc Cohn while she was waitressing led to a contract with Columbia. She scored an international hit in the summer of 1992 with "Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover" from her debut full-length Tongues & Tails. Her follow-up, Whaler, produced a U.S. Top 10 hit single in "As I Lay Me Down" and a U.K. Top 20 hit with "Right Beside You." After an extended hiatus, she returned in 1999 with Timbre, an assured and mature collection of adult contemporary pop. Her first independently released album, Wilderness, followed in 2004. A live album, Bad Kitty Board Mix, appeared in 2006 and Crossing followed in 2012. ~ Rovi Staff
