About SLANG
Artist Biography
West London rapper/musician Dan Dare first made a name for himself through his production work for other artists, but broke out on his own with solo material released under the name Slang. Honestly tackling vulnerable subject matters like mental health and isolation, Slang melded Dare's songwriter sensibilities with a decidedly grime-inflected rap style. His first single, 2016's melancholic "YAY (You Alright, Yeah?)" set the tone for Slang's approach, offering sad, storytelling flows over a backdrop of sentimental guitar patterns and rugged beats.
Dare got his start in music rhyming under the name Brutality in West London's late-2000s grime collective the Gritty Committee. While active as an emcee, he was also busy honing his production style -- over a ten-year period, he became a respected producer, working with mainstream artists like Charli XCX, Wiley, and Newton Faulkner. Always working on his own music as well, Dare debuted his Slang alter ego in 2016, offering a hybrid of rap and mainstream pop that utilized the best aspects of all of his musical gifts. Songwriting and production chops played into the creation of his tracks as much as his love of street rap, and his songs took on a wistful, nostalgic, and often painfully honest tone. His first single "YAY (You Alright, Yeah?)" was followed in 2017 by a self-titled four song EP. Tracks leaked out in a piecemeal fashion from there, with the fwENDZ mixtape collecting several singles; the 2018 EP Terms & Conditions offering four new tracks; and the carefree track "Richest Man in the World" being released in the summer of 2018. ~ Fred Thomas
